Fitness Class Descriptions
Below you will find the fitness class descriptions for our current group fitness classes.
Due to COVID-19 physical distancing measures, there will be a limit to the number of participants in each class. Participants must register for the class in advance.
All Levels Yoga
In yoga, we connect the rhythm of the breath with a series of yoga poses (asanas). This is a zero-judgement class, everyone moves to their own ability so all levels are welcome. Participants may use blocks and adjustments/accommodations can be made to poses. Goals of the class are muscle activation, posture improvement, tension release, and reducing stress and anxiety. We always finish class in a final resting pose (savasana), to finish class feeling refreshed and rested.
*Please bring your own mat/blocks with you.
Active Aging
Feel energized in this safe, fun class that will contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle. Participants will move through whole body movement patterns to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility.
Please bring a small towel or a yoga strap, a mat, and if possible, a pair of light weights. Limited weights are available for use.
AquaFit
Leave the running shoes behind and join the growing numbers in the pool for a terrific cardiovascular workout that provides less stress on the joints while firming muscles thanks to water's natural resistance (deep and shallow water classes offered). AquaFit is suitable for participants of all ages. No swimming skills required.
Body Strong
Improve muscle tone while working your body from head to toe. This class uses hand held weights and body weight exercises to provide a challenging and fun workout. Class includes warm up, cool down, and floor work with abdominal training and stretching.
*A limited number of weights are available for this class. Participants are asked to bring their own mat.
Cardio Kickboxing
Cardio kickboxing combines martial arts techniques with fast-paced cardio. This high-energy workout challenges the beginner and elite athlete alike. Build stamina and improve your coordination and flexibility as you build lean muscle with this fun and challenging workout.
DalSpin
Join us for an exhilarating 45-minute ride, varied with drills including hills, sprints, and tempo rides. Participants can work at their own pace by adjusting the spin bike’s resistance and intensity level. Class begins with a warmup and ends with a cooldown that includes standing stretch. An overview of how to adjust seats, handlebars and resistance will be given at the beginning, and postural cueing is offered throughout class.
- Each class is limited to 18 people.
- Each bike is labeled (1-18) - participants MUST use the bike number they are assigned to by the instructor for contact tracing purposes.
- Masks MUST be worn until the instructor indicates the class is beginning.
- Participants should arrive before the class begins and may not be permitted to enter the room after a class has already begun.
- Indoor footwear only please.
- Bags, outdoor footwear, coats, etc., should be stored in a cubby or in a locker in one of the locker rooms
DSU Yoga

This class is restricted to Dalhousie students only. This class is sponsored by the DSU.
Flow Yoga
Vinyasa Flow is a dynamic type of yoga class where the postures are linked with the breath to increase strength and flexibility as well as relaxation and stress release. This class is open to all levels but expect lots of movement and to break a sweat!
Suitable for all ability levels. Please bring your own yoga mat.
Full Body H.I.I.T
This efficient 60 minute class is a full-body, multi-level workout accessible to all fitness levels. This class combines a series of strength, power, and cardio exercises during timed intervals to keep you motivated and sweating. The exercises are varied week to week to keep it fresh, challenging, and fun. Although many intervals are based on high intensity training principles, participants will choose their own intensity level from low-moderate-high throughout the class.
Functional Flexin'
If you're looking for a full-body workout, look no further! This class will use body weight exercises to work on developing your core and general mobility. Functional fitness is the focus! Exercises and length of intervals will vary from class to class so that boredom is never a problem! Exercises will be demonstrated at levels from beginner to more advanced so that all participants can get their hearts pumping!
Gentle Yoga

Hatha Yoga
Hatha yoga is a gentle form of yoga that combines breathing techniques with poses. This form of yoga is designed to promote a sense of relaxation. In this class, we will work through slow, easy flows aimed at increasing flexibility and balance.

H.I.I.T
This efficient 60-minute class is a full-body, multi-level workout, alternating between cardio, strength and power exercises during timed intervals. The exercises are varied from week to week to keep it fresh, challenging and fun. Although 'H.I.I.T.' stands for high intensity interval training, participants will choose their own intensity level from low-moderate-high throughout the class.
Step
Step adds the element of intensity without impact and is a great way to get the heart rate up while toning the thighs. For die hard step lovers as well as those new to the Aerobic step. Step height is adjustable, to accommodate participants of various heights as well as different levels of experience and fitness. Cool down includes toning, stretch, and core work.
STRONG 45™
Customized for the active adult, STRONG45 combines high intensity interval training with the science of synched music motivation. It combines body weight, muscle conditioning, cardio and plyometric training moves synced to original music that has been specifically designed to match every single move to push you beyond your limits.
This class is a lower intensity, 45 minute version of the regular STRONG Nation™ class and is meant only for the active adult or folks who require modifications.
STRONG Nation™
STRONG Nation™ combines high intensity interval training with the science of synched music motivation. It combines body weight, muscle conditioning, cardio and plyometric training moves synced to original music that has been specifically designed to match every single move to push you beyond your limits.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi will help improve balance, mobility, co-ordination and stamina. The program is designed to be gentle and slow and offers the opportunity for absolute beginners to explore each move. Dr. Ping Lu has been practicing this method for over 30 years and is excited to share all the benefits that Tai Chi has to offer both body and mind.
Zumba™
Learn to loosen up the hips and shoulders and shake and shimmy your way to a great cardio workout. Zumba is a medium impact floor aerobics class with a warm up and cool down, spiced up with Latin music and a blend of Latin style dance movements. Highly energetic and fun!
Zumba™ Gold
ZUMBA GOLD is specifically designed to take the exciting Latin and international dance rhythms created in the original ZUMBA Program and bring them to the active older adult, the beginner participant, and other special populations that may need modifications for success. Created to emphasize the basics, this explosive program is so easy to follow that people of any age can do it! This invigorating Latin-inspired, dance-fitness program includes Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Belly Dance, Flamenco, Tango, and more!
