Dalhousie set to host 2012 Subway AUS Women’s Hockey Championship
Katya Sodamin - February 16, 2012
The Subway AUS Women’s Hockey Championship returns to Halifax this year as Dalhousie University will host the three-day showcase from March 1-4, 2012.
The event will feature the top six Atlantic University Sport (AUS) teams as they battle for the title in an annual event that showcases the best women’s hockey in the Maritimes. St. Francis Xavier, the 2011 defending champions, currently lead the conference standings and are closely followed by Université de Moncton. Mount Allison University, the University of Prince Edward Island, St. Thomas University and the host Dalhousie have all already qualified for the championship tournament based on regular season standings.
With only a handful of games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers are beginning to set their sights on the tournament and working hard to move up in the standings. Fifth-year Dalhousie assistant captain Jocelyn LeBlanc is excited to complete her career on home ice. “We have always played well at home and plan to continue that trend into playoffs,” says Jocelyn. “I expect it to be a highly competitive weekend because our league has a lot of parity this year. Anyone can beat any team on any given night. It’s going to come down to who wants to win the most that weekend.”
Dalhousie head coach Sean Fraser says, “We are learning every game and using each game as another opportunity to prepare for the AUS championship weekend. I am personally looking forward to hosting playoffs this year as it would be extra special for Dalhousie to win its first title at home.”
Games will take place at 3pm and 7pm daily Thursday through Saturday, with the championship game on Sunday, March 4 at 2pm. Schedule details will be determined at the conclusion of regular season play on February 26.
Day passes will be available for adults ($8), seniors 65+ ($7), students ($6), and children under 12 ($4). Tournament passes cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 65+, $15 for students and $10 for children under 12. Dalhousie students receive free admission with their student ID. Team packages are available for $30 and include admission for 17 youth and two coaches. In order to register your team, email abarrett@dal.ca before February 27. Tickets are available for purchase at the gate one hour before game time. All games held at Dalhousie will be available online via webcast at www.ssncanada.ca.
