Tigers fundraising a success

This season the Dalhousie Tigers have been hard at work raising money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), Atlantic Region and Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC) Atlantic.
After four games dedicated to each organization this season the Dalhousie Tigers are proud to announce that, with the help of their fans and the community, they raised $2,509.05 for CBCF, Atlantic and $2,335.75 for PCC Atlantic.
The Tigers women’s basketball and volleyball teams have been raising money for CBCF, Atlantic for the past three years and were joined by the women’s hockey team last season. This year all of the women’s teams came together to tackle the challenge and CBCF, Atlantic fundraisers were held at basketball, hockey, soccer and volleyball games.
"It's close to our heart,” says women’s basketball head coach Anna Stammberger. “Everyone has been affected by cancer in some way and we enjoy working and donating to this cause as it's a great opportunity for the Tigers to see the big picture, and to think of and support others. “
"Thanks to the support of groups like Dalhousie University athletics, we were able to award over $1 million dollars in research grants last year in Atlantic Canada,” says Gillian Zink, Development Officer for CBCF, Atlantic.
On the Tigers men’s side four fundraising events for PCC Atlantic were hosted by the basketball, hockey, soccer and volleyball teams.
Peter Mallette, Director, Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic says, “Our mission is to raise money and create awareness about the risk of Prostate Cancer – so fund raising events like this go a long way in helping us achieve that. Prostate Cancer isn’t considered an old man’s disease anymore. Younger and younger men are being diagnosed, so events like this help us get the message out to men of all ages to be proactive about their health.”
“We are proud to support the campaign. Our team has raised several thousand dollars for prostate cancer research over the past two years. It is a small way that our program can contribute to the community,” says men’s basketball head coach John Campbell.
Money was raised through t-shirt sales, 50/50’s, raffles, gate donations and canvassing. All of the Dal teams helped each other, taking turns running 50/50 or t-shirt sales at each other’s games, even the swimming, cross country and track and field teams pitched in at a few games so the totals reflect an overall Tigers effort.
“We are so pleased to have our varsity programs involved in both prostate and breast cancer fund raising initiatives,” says Dalhousie University Athletic Director Karen Moore. “The coaches and athletes have worked hard and our fans have stepped forward to support both causes. We are happy to help raise awareness for these diseases and will be even happier when researchers find a cure so that no one will have to lose a loved one to cancer.”
