Mon, Sept. 21 ‑ Fitness Centre update: parking & pedestrian walkways

Posted by Amanda Kiby-Sheppard on September 21, 2015 in Current News

The university is now entering the implementation stage for Phase I of a new fitness facility to be built at the Eliza Ritchie site on South Street. Features of the new structure will include cardio and strength training facilities, group fitness studios, change rooms and customer service amenities.

Construction update:

  • Construction of the new fitness centre is expected to begin in late September, beginning with site preparations.
  • A tender has been issued for demolition and excavation, including the removal of the structures located at 6250 South Street (Eliza Ritchie Hall), 6280 South Street and 6286 South Street.
  • To accommodate this work, a fence will be erected around the site (identified in red on image below). The fence will require the permanent closure of parking spaces, including the “upper Dalplex lot”, the line of metered spaces behind 6280 South Street and the Eliza Ritchie parking lot - please note that changes to Dalplex Member parking is not presently anticipated.
  • Pedestrian access to Dalplex will be affected due to the fencing. A new pedestrian walkway will be created from South Street to the Dalplex main entrance, via the Dalplex driveway (identified in yellow on image below).
  • Vehicle access to Dalplex's main entrance will also be affected by the fencing as patrons will no longer be permitted to drive directly up to the entrance doors for drop-offs/pick-ups but instead will have to facilitate drop-off to the right of the new 'Emergency Vehicles Only' area.
  • The driveway from South Street to the Dalplex lot will also be shifted to the west to make room for the new building. Two-way traffic will be maintained into the Dalplex lot during construction.
  • Demolition and excavation will occur through the fall and is expected to be complete before the end of December.
